Spacegirl Books Ltd is a small UK press which exists to publish the children's books of author Katy Watson. Katy was a bi-sexual single mum, writer, feminist and activist. Born in 1966, she grew up in England, spent her adult life mostly in Brixton and died in 2008 from lymphoma.
Katy wrote four children's books, of which only one has so far been published. Spacegirl Pukes, as illustrated by Vanda Carter. First published by Onlywomen Press in 2005, it attracted both controversy and a loyal following. We have now published a new edition of that book.
What few people know is that Katy had also written a sequel, Spacegirl and the Alien. Vanda is now hard at work on the illustrations for the new book, which you can see on this website. We hope to see it into print one day.
Another story that Katy wrote, Dangerous Deborah Puts Her Foot Down, will follow if all goes well. All feature girls having adventures and exploring the world with the help of their lesbian mums. Katy was a pioneer in that she didn't make these stories 'about' lesbian mums, they are just in the background as another type of family that exists without needing explanation.
This company has been set up by Katy's sister Anna to keep her legacy alive. We have no plans to expand into publishing other authors, so please do not send manuscripts.
All illustrations on this website are the copyright of Vanda Carter.
